12:56 pm - Waiting for Godot

honeyfitz
Sir Ian is co-starring with Patrick Stewart in Waiting for Godot, which will tour the UK prior to a West End run in 2009.

It's like some kind of dream casting - and I'm sure it will live up to expectations!

Metrodome have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of King Lear on 6th October 2008 priced at £19.99 RRP. Recorded in High Definition at Pinewood Studios, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s King Lear stars Ian McKellen and is directed by Trevor Nunn and Chris Hunt. The tragedy tells the story of a headstrong ageing monarch who decides to divide his kingdom amongst his three daughters, depending on which declares their love the strongest. Cordelia (Romola Garai) is the only daughter to reply truthfully yet Lear disowns her, and so follows one of the most compelling stories of greed, betrayal and blindness to one’s self ever committed to the stage.

King Lear will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Christmas Day, and released on Blu-ray Disc on Boxing Day.

The only extra is an exclusive interview with Ian McKellen.

7:53 am - Sir Ian becomes Companion of Honour

lord_saruxi
From Metro.co.uk:

Veteran actor Sir Ian McKellen has been made a Companion of Honour for services to drama and equality.

The Order of the Companions of Honour consists of the Queen and only 65 other members, all outstanding talents in their fields from painters Lucian Freud and Sir David Hockney to acclaimed actress Dame Judi Dench.

The star - who was awarded a knighthood in 1990 - received the honour from the Queen.

Sir Ian, an Oscar-nominated actor, is also a founder member of the gay rights organisation Stonewall established in 1989.

He's known around the globe for his role as Wizard Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which earned him an Oscar nomination in 2002. His other nomination was in 1999 for Gods and Monsters.

Nice one Ian:)

He's more King Lear than the king of pop, but actor Sir Ian McKellen is turning his hand to the music charts.

The man who played Gandalf in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy is hooking up with indie band Guillemots to star in their latest video...

3:20 pm - Ian McKellen: Leader of the Gay Conspiracy!

hohaiyee
Catholic bishop hits out at 'gay conspiracy' to destroy Christianity - The Scotman

He singled out the actor Sir Ian McKellen, who was given a New Year honour for services to gay rights, pointing out that Oscar Wilde was locked up only a century ago for homosexual acts.

I really wish that hideously hateful feeder of filth and his minions would just go away already. I find the Pope laughable, but damn, it still hurts too, especially knowing that there are still people support him, him and his church that sheltered pedophile priests, and his religion that demand woman to give themselves up for babies babies babies, but not give us the means or authority to protect said babies, enslaving us to the mercies of the patriarchy that would use its children instead (example; pedophile priests again, most obvious but not the only example).

I conclude that the Pope does not care for morality at all, considering his sheltering of the pedophile priests, but rather, his war on gays and women are certainly driven by resentment that 'such people' can find happiness, when he could not. (Note: Affectionate physical contact is actually integral to our health.)

"At the very highest levels of the Vatican Papal circle I am told by an impeccably placed third party, a cardinal has regular sex with a lay employee in the Papal city. There are apparently lengthy gaps between sex for the cardinal to re-confess and clear his conscience. Celibacy must be a taxing state of mind. A man who hides his true nature behind the purple doesn't respect himself. He can love his neighbour only as much as he loves himself and that's little. Even if it's just a rumour, it's a major example of hypocrisy and of homophobia - a condition which affects gays as much as anybody else." - Sir Ian Mckellen, July 2003

Plus, I bet the Pope singled out Sir Ian, because he is bitterly aware that Sir Ian is hot and he's NOT!

ETA: Atheist Humour, it has a section with disclaimers for bibles too! (It's really SAD how many people got mad at Sir Ian when he suggested it, when it was in response to demands that The Golden Compass MOVIE includes a fictional disclaimer at the beginning! ...and oh, could the OP have picked a more sinister picture of McKellen with the post about how McKellen has to tear out the pages that tells him he's an abomination before he can sleep in an hotel? Poor guy should really get someone who'll check out his hotels beforehand and remove them. I understand how deeply upsetting the mere presence of trauma trigger material could be.)

All right, all right I admit it! It's all down to me! When I'm not adapting Gilbert and Sullivan lyrics, writing papers on late twelfth century psychology, drooling over beautiful teenage boys on 4OD or shouting down pernicious godbotherers in the street, I devote my every waking moment to bringing down the Holy See of Rome and everyone in it.

I sit like a big gay spider at the centre of my web of corruption and deceit. Behind every church embezzlement scandal, every paedophile priest scare, every vile outburst of anachronistic Catholic bile, you will find the hand of my effete, prancing minions. Through a network of dashing bisexual double-agents I know everything that transpires in Catholic churches across the country. I send special agent McKellan out to seduce deacons undermine the authority of local clergy on a daily basis. My hypnotic suggestion tapes play non-stop in all the seminaries in the land. I have packed every nunnery from here to Geneva with trained lesbian insurgents and half the cardinals in the conclave are under my sway, ready to bring the church to its knees at a single theatrical wave of my ostrich-feather fan.

And there's nothing they can do to stop me! Now I have the holocaust lobby in my camp those pesky inquisitors can't touch me! Mwahahahahah! Soon the whole world will be under my sway, and then we can do away with heterosexuality forever! Mwahahahahahhahaha!

Of Course Ian McKellen would play Gandalf? Right? RIGHT?

March 11th, 2008 ianmckellen.jpg

It seems a given to LOTR fans, but maybe there are actually some people out there who still think Ian McKellen can be replaced as Gandalf in the upcoming ‘Hobbit’ films. As of last night, according this to this report from Ringer Philip, Ian McKellen has not been contacted to reprise his role as everyone’s favorite wizard. Check out Phil’s report and then feel free to make your voice heard in our message boards and other various venues.

Here’s Phils report:

Sir Ian McKellen gave a talk at Cambridge (where he went to university) last night, which was pretty amazing. He stayed around afterwards to sign books (he’s written a foreword to a book about the Marlowe Society, a really influential Cambridge-based drama group of which he was part) and answer more questions. I got the chance to ask him whether he’d been approached about the two films that it seems that Guillermo Del Toro is going to direct. Sir Ian said that he hadn’t been approached, but he was aware of the project, that Del Toro was to direct and Peter Jackson to produce. He referred to Jackson having said that he couldn’t see anyone but McKellen taking over the role of Gandalf, and seemed to agree with me when I enthused about how great Del Toro is. We also mentioned the power of fans, and specifically the internet in these kinda matters, and he suggested - perhaps half-jokingly but still - that I start a campaign for him to resume his role as Gandalf in the forthcoming movies.

We don’t see any harm in letting our voices be heard! Phil has set up a facebook group for this purpose (located here) and we have a thread running on our message board. So go ahead, speak out!

We have to make sure he's Gandalf!!!!

I was looking to write Sir Ian a fan letter. Does anyone know of an address I could send it to? I've googled for it, but so far all I've found are a few 'celebrity address' sites that make me a bit suspicious.

4:35 pm - McKellen's 2001 giggling dash across the lawn

hohaiyee
28 August 2001 Cannes Do

First I just smiled and then giggled to myself, just in control, biting my lip so as not to be noticed — after all how to explain that the sun had finally started to turn my brain? Then exhaustion released my self-control and I began to laugh. And laugh out loud. Ian continued talking. So I laughed some more, carefree and enjoying it now. I stood up and rocked on my feet roaring by this time, until all I could was to run away, laughing across the lawn in search of a drink. Chris told me later that he feared for my sanity. He was right to.

Oh my god, pictures? Footage? It was the middle of an interview after all. Delightfully adorable man.

...and how does the cast and crew of LOTR refer to Ian McKellen and Ian Holm when they were both in the same area?

4:11 pm - Meeting Sir Ian!

lord_saruxi
Hey I'm sort of new round here so appologies if I'm not doing this right lol.

Ok last night (January 5th) I went to see King Lear- and after the show I met Sir Ian!!!!!!

He's a really, really nice man- but its impossible to realise just how amazing it is standing talking to him- he's Gandalf, he's Magneto, he's Richard III, he's Lear, he's Iorek Brynson- he's amazing:D

A bunch of people waited for him at the stage door- but what I'm really getting to is the fact that there was a man filming as Sir Ian met everybody- please please please help me find the man! He'd gone by the time my euphoria was over and I'd calmed down:P But someone somewhere must know this man:D

Help me find it!

Thankyou so much:)
